Flavius Vegetius Renatus
Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus lived around 390 C.E. He is the author of the "Epitomae rei militaris." This essay on military science was dedicated to the ruling emperor.
His sources include Cato, Cornelius Celsus, Frontius, Paternus, and the writings of the Roman Emperors Augustus, Trajan, and Hadrian. Renatus was actually a veterinarian. Under that rubric, he compsed the work "Artis Mulomedicinae," in which Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus introduced the term "Thuringian" for a type of thoroughbred horse; the term was only later applied to the Germanic tribe.
